Bio:
Rod Barnett is Professor and Chair of the Master of Landscape
Architecture at AU’s School of Architecture. He has won numerous design awards
and his work has featured in national and international journals. He has
authored many refereed publications and book chapters and has extensive
experience in the development of landscape architecture degree programs and
curricula.
Professor Barnett has taught design studio at all levels, as
well as history and cultural landscape courses and seminars. He believes that
landscape architecture education should encourage innovative design thinking,
and that it is the responsibility of landscape designers to continuously
re-make the world in response to the challenges of contemporary life. The best
way to do this is to treat design as an ongoing investigation into the
relationships between people and the earth that sustains them.
His research focuses on urban landscape architecture, where
designers must work with dynamic, open-ended processes that are unpredictable
and constantly changing. His studio projects invite students to immerse
themselves in the complicated interactive webs of public open space, and to help
communities to realize living conditions that are adaptive and open-ended, like
the natural and urban processes that characterize their daily lives. Professor
Barnett maintains two websites, www.rodbarnett.co
and www.artweb.co.nz, which offer texts and
images related to his research and design interests.
