Bio:

A good teacher must project authority in the classroom, be knowledgeable in their subject area, be well prepared, and be able to pass on knowledge in a manner that is stimulating to the students.  The schedules, lesson plans and assignment strategies must be set at the start of the semester, and students should know at the start what is required to succeed.  My core teaching value is, you never stop learning and you never stop learning how to learn

Bio:

I seek to educate students of architecture and construction about the powerful physical forces at work when they design and construct buildings. I believe the best way to learn this is first to master the Mathematics and Physics used to quantify structures - best accomplished in the classroom. Equally important is the development of intuition about how buildings work - best learned through the practice of building structures, from models to full size projects. In all of my structures classes I require students to build something useful, preferably in a service-learning student team. On these projects, students not only practice building but also the less tangible arts of communication, teamwork, and public service.

Information Technology (IT) has emerged as the major technological development of our age. As in nearly every human endeavor, the construction industry is finding ways to shape new information tools to operate more efficiently. I incorporate computational and graphical digital applications in my teaching and explore these applications with my students. Together we are creating appropriate IT applications for construction. Armed with these new digital tools, many of our graduates have played a major role in modernizing the construction industry, helping lift it from a collection of trades to a profession.

Bio:

In construction management education, it is important to provide fundamental information from which students can develop a base of knowledge.  It is equally important that this information be clear, concise, and consistent.  This provides for a firm educational foundation that is critical in construction education, from which practicality may be elaborated.  Accordingly, the application of subject material is not only helpful for visualization and understanding, but is essential in preparing students for immersion into the working construction industry.  I believe that regularly searching for improved methods of information delivery is necessary to perpetuate “engaged” education.  The culture of learning constantly evolves.  Innovation and technology in the construction industry are testaments to this, and must be reflected in the dissemination of both foundational and applied information to students through construction application and experience.

Lead Paint Removal Education – One day seminar in Mobile, AL on July 25, 2008. Two additional seminars are scheduled for February 2009.  The seminars are sponsored by a grant with the National Center for Healthy Housing to develop and conduct educational seminars in Alabama on the methods of safe removal of lead paint from homes and residential buildings. Seminars are designed for individuals and contractors.

Safety Training
- Currently developing an online construction safety training program with Junshan Liu. The program should be on-line by November 2010.
Industry Education - Speaker at the 17t and 18th National Construction Safety Conferences, held in Chicago in 2007 and 2008.

Promoting International Residential Code Adoption
– Wrote a booklet designed to facilitate the adoption of modern building codes by municipalities in Alabama, which promote safer and more energy efficient homes. The project was funded by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), who will reproduce and distribute the publication.

OSHA Training
– 10-Hour and 30-Hour OSHA training for contractors and contractors’ employees.

Energy Star Education
– Developed materials for educating the public on what Energy Star was about, how it help them, and how to incorporate more Energy Star products and methods into their homes. The distribution of materials is through the Alabama Extension System and booths at various events in Alabama.

Katrina Rebuild Seminars
– Conducted four one-day seminars in Mobile and Baldwin Counties promote the use of the International Building Code and modern building techniques in the rebuilding of the coastal areas of Alabama after hurricane Katrina. Two of the seminars were for residential contractors, one was for commercial contractors, and one was for building code officials. The project was funded through a grant from ADECA and the Department of Energy (DOE).
