Students from the McWhorter School of Building Science recently won the commercial division of the AGC/ASC Regional Student Competition in Jacksonville, Fla., beating six other teams from construction education programs throughout the Southeast. The competition was sponsored jointly by Associated General Contractors and Associated Schools of Construction. The corporate sponsor of the commercial division of the competition was the Orlando office of Brasfield and Gorrie. The team consisted of Russell Glass, Shaun Guin, Tyler Maloney, Kenneth Roberts, Derrek Wilson and Lauren Wybenga. The team was coached by Mike Hosey, the school’s visiting industry professional. In a matter of 10 hours, the team had to develop a mock written construction project proposal and make a presentation for an 83-bed hospital tower and new emergency room. In addition to placing first, the team was also awarded Best Presentation within the commercial division. The team will compete in the National Student Competition in Las Vegas in spring 2008 at the Associated General Contractors convention.
