Minority and Female Students Receive Scholarships to Attend CADC Summer Camps

Eight high school students from Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee spent one week in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction’s Academic Success Action Program (ASAP) developing their academic skills in college Algebra I and II, physics and computer aided drawing. During the following two weeks, the ASAP participants, including six additional campers, attended one of three architecture, building construction or design summer camps.

During the architecture and design camps, the students spent an exciting week in an intensive workshop that began with basic design concepts and ended with an architectural and design project. The students’ daily experience consisted of technical demonstrations and presentations by guest speakers. ASAP also featured the new building construction camp which began with basic construction concepts presented by faculty from the McWhorter School of Building Science and ended with two built constructions projects for local daycare facilities under the expert tutelage of instructor Jeremy Clark. The building construction camp showcased guest speakers including professional architects, designers and contractors who spoke about their fields of interest and other topics that inspired the participants and helped them understand what career paths are available. These students are encouraged to further their education in one of the five graduate programs offered by CADC.

A total of 14 scholarships were provided by Vernell Barnes of Atlanta, GA; Royrickers Cook, VP for University Outreach; Dick Danner Construction of Birmingham, AL; Mayfield Gentry Realty Advisors of Detroit, Michigan; Capstone Building of Birmingham, AL; Nissan of Gallatin in Gallatin, TN; and Robins & Morton of Birmingham, AL. The donors focused specifically on minorities and females in hopes of increasing their participation in the fields of architecture, design and construction.

The donors’ commitment to provide scholarships for underrepresented students ties in with Auburn University’s long-standing commitment to bringing educational resources and opportunities to the region. The College of Architecture, Design & Construction has played a vital role in that relationship, assisting with personal development and exploring strategies to improve community and economic development.
