An exhibition of paintings and photographs by noted architect A. L. Aydelott, “Architecture: Now and Then,” is on exhibit now through Nov. 30 at Auburn University in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction Gallery in Dudley Commons.

The exhibition is presented by CADC and features the architect’s paintings of prominent cathedrals from around the world and photographs of the Pet Building and Pet Plaza in downtown St. Louis.

Alfred Lewis Aydelott, born in Arkansas in 1916, received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois. He moved to Memphis and worked with Lucian Minor Dent from 1938 until 1946. After returning from service in World War II, Aydelott founded his own firm in Memphis where he was based until 1974 and where he became known as the elder statesman of Memphis Modernism.

In the last 33 years, Aydelott has pursued a second career in art, and he now resides in California. An emeritus Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Aydelott has served as visiting design critic and architect-in-residence at Yale University, Carnegie Institute of Technology and Auburn University.

“We are pleased to be able to exhibit the work of one of this region’s most recognized and prominent architects,” said Dan Bennett, dean of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction.

The paintings in the exhibition depict cathedrals in European countries including England, Spain, France, Austria and Italy and serve as recollections of Aydelott’s travels.

The Pet Building is one of Aydelott’s most renowned projects. Built in 1969 as headquarters for Pet Inc., the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 and is now being converted into luxury apartments. It is an example of the “new brutalism” style that used concrete and angular forms to project a sense of strength.

Aydelott said, “I have marveled at the imaginative wonders architects have created since the beginning of history, and I am most fortunate to have one of my buildings set aside and deemed by my peers as having historic significance. No more could be asked of life than to be so honored.”

The exhibition is sponsored by Christian Brothers University in Memphis, where Aydelott was involved in the design of the campus. After the Auburn University exhibition, the exhibit will travel to the University of Tennessee, University of Arkansas, University of Texas, Mississippi State University, Tulane University and Washington University.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Nov. 23.

Students from the McWhorter School of Building Science recently won the commercial division of the AGC/ASC Regional Student Competition in Jacksonville, Fla., beating six other teams from construction education programs throughout the Southeast. The competition was sponsored jointly by Associated General Contractors and Associated Schools of Construction. The corporate sponsor of the commercial division of the competition was the Orlando office of Brasfield and Gorrie. The team consisted of Russell Glass, Shaun Guin, Tyler Maloney, Kenneth Roberts, Derrek Wilson and Lauren Wybenga. The team was coached by Mike Hosey, the school’s visiting industry professional. In a matter of 10 hours, the team had to develop a mock written construction project proposal and make a presentation for an 83-bed hospital tower and new emergency room. In addition to placing first, the team was also awarded Best Presentation within the commercial division. The team will compete in the National Student Competition in Las Vegas in spring 2008 at the Associated General Contractors convention.

“An Architecture of Decency” by Krista Tippett will air on public radio stations nationwide from Thursday, November 15 through Wednesday, November 21, and it will be featured online at www.speakingoffaith.org during the same time.

In this program, Speaking of Faith explores sustainability, both
material and spiritual, driven by the architectural vision of the Rural
Studio. Speaking of Faith producers visited the Rural Studio and
interviewed its students, clients, and community partners. Through
their voices, alongside Krista Tippett’s conversation with director
Andrew Freear, the program explores architecture as a social art, and as
a force for repairing the fabric of human community as well as the
natural world.

“An Architecture of Deceny” is part of “Consumed” - a series on
sustainability from Speaking of Faith and other American Public Media
programs (http://sustainability.org/consumed/). Though not broadcast in
Alabama, you can download, podcast, or stream the program from the
website, and explore images, audio, and video from Speaking of Faith’s
trip to the Rural Studio. You can also learn more about the show by
visiting Rural Studio Roadtrip, where Speaking of Faith’s senior producer
Mitch Hanley and online editor Trent Gilliss document their week-long
journey through Alabama to visit the Rural Studio.
