DESIGNhabitat Studio II - 2-story
Concept
By expressing the two modules in a two-story configuration, this scheme develops a rich set of interior and exterior spatial relationships and dramatically redefines the “street presence” of this modestly scaled house. The space created under the upper
module becomes a porch that “borrows” additional living space beyond the interior of the house.

Modular Opportunities
In a site built project, the default would be to stack one floor on top of the other. When working with modules, there is the opportunity to ask what happens when the upper module is offset, twisted, or otherwise breaks the alignment of the lower module. It this case, the upper module creates the “bonus” space of the screened porch. There is an inherent obligation with modular project to think not only at a large and small scale, but also at the scale of the modular units.
Site-built Opportunities
A large portion of this project is the inclusion of site built components which will help to incorporate Habitat for Humanity’s sweat equity goals. The site built trellis not only creates a dramatic entrance, but also acts as a sunscreen to protect the west side of the house. The “bonus” space of the screen porch would be built on site. Lastly, the stairs would be built on site. This allows for larger spaces within the module, but also allows for greater flexibility in the location of the connection point between the modules.
Exterior Expression
In the cladding of the house, there is an attempt to create a dialog between site built and factory built, as well as the two modules. The lower module has a vertical language and the upper module has a relatively large scale, fine horizontal language. The rainscreen of the stairs and the trellis owrk of the west screen wall would create strong horizontal lines in contrast to the modules.
