History of the School

The 2002 - 2003 school year marked the 95th Anniversary of the architecture degree program at Auburn University (then Alabama Polytechnic Institute). The School of Architecture began with the establishment of a curriculum in architecture in 1907 in the Civil Engineering Department. Auburn was the first university in the South to offer a degree in architecture. By the turn of the century there were very few universities and colleges offering degrees in architecture, which makes Auburn’s program one of the oldest in the nation.

In the 1930’s landscape architecture, the interior design program, and a program in building construction became part of the Architecture Department which also included programs in art, music and theatre. In 1979 the master’s degree program in community planning was established. In 1986 the university was reorganized into a series of schools and colleges. The Departments of Art, Music and Theatre were administratively assigned to the new College of Liberal Arts. At that time the school was renamed the School of Architecture. In 1994 the School took its current form and was renamed the College of Architecture, Design and Construction which includes the School of Architecture, the Department of Building Science, and the Department of Industrial Design. The School of Architecture includes undergraduate degree programs in architecture, interior architecture, and environmental design, and graduate degree programs in landscape architecture and community planning.
