Student Services FAQ

Who is my advisor?
Tammie Gourdouze is officially assigned to undergraduate students and Joyce Griffin to graduate students within the School of Architecture. You may, however, see any advisor who is available; we do not assign advisors, unless the student has a preference.

Where and when can I see my advisor?
Advisors’ see students from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from 12:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in 120 Dudley Hall. We do not make appointments for students who are enrolled in our college unless it is an appointment with parents. We require prospective students coming for a visit to make an appointment in advance.

How do I change my major?
To change a major within the College of Architecture Design and Construction, students must see an advisor to get the correct information on transfer credits and courses needed. For Architecture and undergraduate Building Science, the student must have a 2.8 GPA to transfer. To change majors out of the College, the student must obtain their folder from Student Services along with a “Change of Major” form to take to their new college.

How can I find out if my credits transfer from another University as a transfer or transient student?
Students must meet with an advisor to know which credits from another institution have been applied to an Auburn degree. Admissions determine which courses are needed for admission to Auburn University, but the Advisor decides how those credits will apply toward degree requirements.

As a transient student, the student must get a transient form from either Student Services or the Registrar’s Office. The student should have the form completed by an advisor who must approve courses for transfer credit. Students should note that you cannot be enrolled in two institutions concurrently.

What is academic warning and what do I need to do to get off warning?
An undergraduate student is placed on academic warning when their Grade Point Average (GPA) gets below a 2.00. The warning is indicated at the end of the grade report every semester until the GPA is above a 2.00. Academic Warning indicates that the student may also go on suspension from Auburn University if the GPA continues to drop. If the student has any questions about warning or needs any assistance with finding help, please see an advisor.

Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or be placed on academic probation by the Graduate School; please contact the Graduate School for further details.

Where do I receive Auburn University transcripts?
Students can request and receive transcripts from the Registrar’s Office, located at 100 Mary Martin Hall. Official transcripts are mailed to the designated person or institution.

What is my classification and why is it so important?
Classification is important because it determines the student’s registration times. Also, certain classes are only open to students with a specific class standing. It may determine a scholarship, tuition differential, or housing.

Classification refers to a student’s class standing:
Senior (SR)……….91 or more semester hours
Junior (JR)………..61-90 semester hours
Sophomore (SO)..31-60 semester hours
Freshman (FR)…..30 or fewer semester hours

GPR…………….provisional graduate standing
MST…………….full graduate standing

What is a hold?
A Hold on the record will mean the student will not be able to register or drop a class, receive a transcript, get student housing or receive Financial Aid. Here are some offices who may place a Hold and why:

CADC Advisors: If the Advisor needs to see the student. Some Departments place a Hold on all students prior to registration, and lift the Hold only after the student meets with an advisor. CADC Advisors do not routinely place Holds.

Bursar’s Office: If a student has an unpaid bill.

Student Health Center: If the student has an unpaid balance, discrepancies with their insurance, or fail to return a completed health form to the student health center.

Registrar: Students returning to school from suspension.

How and when can I drop or add a class?
A student may add a class by phone or the Internet until the first day of class. After that, the student has to get departmental approval. A student may drop a course by phone or Internet through the 15th class day without a penalty. After the 15th class day, they have until mid-semester to drop receiving a grade of “W”. Courses cannot be dropped after mid-semester without approval from the Associate Dean. Documentation must be provided.

How can I resign from Auburn University?
To drop all courses or to resign, the student must contact Student Services and complete a “Resignation Form”. The student cannot resign from the phone or Internet.

How can I receive a Graduation Check?
If you are an undergraduate student, please see an advisor to receive a graduation check. Also, a diploma application must be completed in the registrar’s office. If you are a graduate student, you must complete the on-line graduation check form through the Graduate School by the end of the semester prior to graduation.

What is my Major GPA?
For undergraduate students, all studio grades are classified as design or major GPA. To find out the design GPA or major GPA, please see an advisor.

When can I apply for scholarships?
Scholarships are only given in Spring Semester for the next academic year. Scholarship applications are available either in the School of Architecture office or Student Services at the beginning of Spring Semester and ending April 1.

How can I get accepted into Architecture and Landscape Architecture?
To become an Architecture student, the student must be first accepted in the Foundation Unit studio Sequence or the Summer Option Studio Sequence. Acceptance to the Foundation Unit Studio is determined by rank based on prior academic performance. The requirements for acceptance to Summer Option are a 2.8 GPA, Calculus I, and 27 semester hours as a student at Auburn or 30 semester hours for a Transfer student. Prior to acceptance to the second year design studio sequence, all students will be reviewed for continuance in the program. For more information, please see an advisor.
