Rural Studio Students Receive International Award

Jennifer Bonner, Mary Beth Maness, Nathan Orrison and Anthony Tindill (currently) a Design-Build Masters student in the College of Architecture Design and Construction) have received a Commendation Award from Architectural Review Magazine for Emerging Architecture. The team won the award for the Pavilion at Perry Lakes which they designed and built for their undergraduate thesis while at the Rural Studio. The team gathered in London several weeks ago to receive the award. Photos and drawings of the building are published in the December 2005 issue of Architectural Review.

The AR Awards for Emerging Architecture is the biggest and best award for young architects in the world and gives £10,000 in prize money. Inaugurated in 1999, the award was conceived by The Architectural Review and d line, the distinguished Danish architectural design firm. It is now supported by Buro Happold. Intended to bring wider international recognition to a talented new generation of architects and designers, last year the competition attracted more than 700 entries from nearly 60 countries, representing every inhabited continent.

Awards are for built or manufactured work only, and besides buildings, the full range of design activity, from landscapes and urban spaces to furniture and cutlery can be submitted.

The Jury for 2005 was Annette Gigon (Gigon/Guyer Architects, Zurich), Sean Godsell (Australia), Luis Mansilla (Mansilla & Tuñon, Madrid), Peter Davey (Former Editor of The Architectural Review) and Paul Finch (Editor of The Architectural Review and Chairman).

I am a Bd Member of Snow Hill Institute in Wilcox county. I am attempting to locate anyone involved in The Spring project at Snow Hill some years ago. The group worked there and began work on an Amplitheatre located near a natural spring. If anyone can put me in contact with someone involved in that project I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time HAPPY NEW YEAR and have a marvelous Monday.

Hi Chalethia, nice to hear from you. I am not familiar with the Spring Hill Project, but I do know a little bit about the Freedman’s Farm project that I think began not long after. I am not 100% sure but I believe both projects were performed through the University Outreach program, not the Rural Studio directly. Either way, your best bet would be to Contact the School Head Bruce Lindsey. You may will find his contact information on the faculty information page. We will not be back in session until the 9th, so it may be tough to get in touch with anyone before then. If you don’t make any progress with Bruce follow up with me via email and I will do my best to track down the information for which are looking. Happy new year to you as well!
