Alan Cook is an associate professor and has been a member of the AU School of Architecture since the fall of 1979. He has taught at all levels of the design curriculum as well as materials and methods of construction and is presently focused at the 2nd & 3rd year studio levels. He also teaches the history of architecture from pre-history to the renaissance. Alan has a minor obsession with things geometric and optical, and in addition, he is fascinated by the psychology of perception and how meaning is embedded in and extracted from artifacts. Along those lines, he has done some research into subliminal perception and stereo-imaging and their implications in the realm of architectural design.
He occasionally executes architectural design projects related to design competitions, many of which have been memorial designs. His most successful venture in the field of competitions has been interdisciplinary work with AU students and faculty on the Solar Decathlon House in 2002. The design and prototype fabrication of furniture are also enjoyable occupations of his. Documentation of the products of these efforts may be seen on his web site.
As native of Nebraska whose mother was a native of Paris, France, he learned to speak french growing-up. Alan has assisted in four Europe Study Abroad trips with the school. He also treasures moments observing celestial events through his telescope and is a member of the Auburn Astronomical Society.
