FUn Studios: Fall 2005

Each Semester we work on a variety of projects, both large and small. Shown here is just one of the many projects the students completed in the Fall 2005 Semester. Follow the links to the right for selected images and project statements for this studio course.

South’s BEST 2005: “Mission to Hubble”

Every Fall the Auburn University Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) host the South’s BEST robotics competition for junior high and high school students on campus at the Coliseum. The contest is meant to “Boost Engineering, Science and Technology” in young people. Competing students must design and build a robot which can traverse from one side of the playing field to the other and retrieve small game pieces to bring back to home base. This mission takes place on a pair of 24′ square playing fields.

Each year the Foundation Unit Studios often participate in the endeavor by designing, fabricating and installing the set for the games developed around a different theme. This is a very fast-paced project, offering new challenges for the begnning students. The students have only three weeks from beginning to end. Perhaps most importantly, they have a real client, a real budget, a real schedule, and a real site. All of this conspires to be a fantastic experience for beginning design students.
