The amphitheatre is found in the backyard of the Chantilly House in Newbern. It consists of an open-air theatre that is used for lectures, films, and gatherings for the Rural Studio and Outreach Studio. It also serves as a location for secondary community education and community events for Newbern and Hale County.
The Rural Studio believes that this project encourages a positive interchange between the arts and the natural and urban environments. This innovative effort will be a constructive link between the arts, education and contemporary life in the Hale County area.
In October 2001, the amphitheater held its first performance, that of a Mark Twain impersonator. It was well attended by the community and proved to be a success. Other functions held in the past year at the amphitheater include: the first annual Newbern Cook-off, the comedian Dexter Thornton, St. Joe Adams, and the Rural Studios ceremonial end of the semester Pig-Roast.
