The Lewis House is home of Evelyn Lewis and her four children. Lack of resources and affordable housing had forced her to disperse her children into different homes all over Hale County, living apart from her with relatives and friends. Upon completion, the new house allowed the Lewis family to live together under one roof for the first time.
The Lewis House comprises four bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bath. The students wanted to make the house as functional and economical as possible, with each room serving multiple uses.
The family had optimal input into the design, with both the mother and children making requests which are seen in the home. The bathroom is compartmentalized, so that two people can use it at the same time for different purposes. Each of the children's bedrooms has a study space, and each bedroom has its own closet and loft storage space. A central hall connects all of the rooms in the house. There is additional book storage space built into its walls. The hallway has large exterior doors and openings to take advantage of cool summer breezes. Also, the hallway has operable vents close to the roof, giving Mrs. Lewis the option of using natural ventilation to run the house at an extremely low operating cost.
