The 20K house is a unique project at the Rural Studio. The impetus for the project is a Rural Development loan available through the federal government. The 502 loan is available to low income people in rural areas. People of very low income, for example social security income, qualify for a $20,000 loan for home repair or construction. The 20K house aims to create a precedent that could potentially give people an alternative to substandard housing or trailers and instead offer people a home that they can value and will appreciate over time. So far three versions of the 20k house have been built by the Outreach program. This year the Thesis program has undertaken the challenge of the 20k house
