The House is Complete!

The 32K Duplex House is complete and we were so excited, we decided to ride a carousel! We are all bidding farewell to Hale County. It is sad to go, our time here has been in many ways challenging. But, it has also been incredibly exciting and gratifying. It is amazing as an architect, to have the opportunity to really explore every detail of a very small house and then actually build it. It has also been wonderful to develop relationships with clients in a way which is very different from the typcial architect-client formula. We hope that Joe, Sherman, and Dinah live happily in the houses we’ve built and look forward to seeing the five 20K houses which are built next year!

Well, almost exactly one full year after arriving in Alabama, we are beginning preparations for our departures from Alabama. We have just one or two more days of work at the 20K house. The last weeks have been filled with finish details. We have been working a lot on finalizing the core: completion of the plumbing, varnishing, and pulling power to the kitchen and bathroom elements. It is quite delightful to see our work nearing completion and that our clients, Joe and Sherman, will soon be able to move in.

Our opening was a success!

The opening was a success, with the interior complete (minus a few minor details like kitchen, bath, and plumbing) and the electricity on, we were able to give people a good sense of the house. We really appreciate all the help from the thesis teams (Lions Park Phases II and III and Akron Boys and Girls Club), former Rural Studio students, Christopher (our Irish visitor), John, Bill, Andrew, David, and others whom I’ve surely forgotten. It was great fun to have a gathering to celebrate the near completion of our house.

It was also a pleasure to have Sunday off before returning to work on the house this Monday. This week, we have varnished the floor in the small unit (and are half done with the big unit), assembled the core pieces in order to locate the plumbing, begun the plumbing and screened the porch. We still need to complete the plumbing, build the barn doors, and assemble and varnish the cores once the plumbing is complete. One week to go and much to do!
