Building a Pod, Part Two
After finishing the platform, we went at attaching Tongue in Groove plywood to it - This task was more difficult than first imagined because some of the connecting pieces of the plywood came to us broken and had to be forced into place. Nevertheless, we finished the sub floor in a very short period.
The next step of construction was the erection of the stud walls. The major difficulty here was that we had not yet acquired the needed windows from Pella (they offer us their custom outlet windows for free) and since they are all custom shaped we had no idea how to size the openings in some of the stud walls, but a short trip to Birmingham with the Dually solved this issue in a day.
The walls went up rather quickly and without errors except some spacing issues where the roof rafters would go. While some of the walls were still being framed up, we started to attach OSB sheeting on the walls and house wrap on top of that.
By the time we had to leave for Chicago, Tuesday the 23th of 2007, all walls, most of the OSB and house wrap, the South roof rafters, plywood and tarpaper on that roof were up and all we covered the North roof with standard tarps to weatherproof it for the week we had to leave in. During the night of Tuesday, a heave storm including Tornadoes hit the region and we had to refit the tarps of the roof, but besides that the Pod proofed to be tight and weatherproof. We were not affected directly, but a couple of houses in Newbern were damaged and some people had to seek temporary shelter.
