let there be ENTRY!
Monday, with the help of team Mind Bullitz, we put up the last of the North wall columns. We then began putting up the last of the largest columns located on the East/entry wall. Once we set the corner members of the Entry wall, we were able to place both top sills connecting the North and South walls to the Entry wall. After brief repairs, we then placed one of the shorter columns on the East facade.
Learning Objective D_Develop ability to work with others: We all work together to place the top sill on the columns 20 feet up in the air on the scaffolding.
Tuesday we continued repairs on vertical members of the East/Entry wall. We also began repairing the top sill located over the main entry door. In order to find the exact center of the East facade, we were obligated to bring the door frame out of storage and temporarily tie it in place. Once set, we were able to determine the the center of the walls and placement for the columns. Afterwhile things began to move quickly until Team Mind Bullitz was informed that the storage place for the arches must be relocated. The tragic news brought a sudden hault to our progress, forcing us to go prepare a future home for the arches. On a lighter note, we met today with a restoration expert, Cesar. He was helpful in giving tips on how to properly restore the arches and windows.
Wednesday was by far one of the most challenging days of our church building experience. Today was the day to move the 1400 pound arches to their new site for storage. In addition to Team Mind Bullitz and Jackalopes, Team Roadkill, several thesis students, and Johnny with his BEAST of a truck also came out to aid in the hardcore duty of moving the arches. After a few smashed fingers, crushed hands, and ripped pants, we finished moving the arches in a mere 3 and a half hours. We then had the rest of the day off to complete work for our other classes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE C_ Develop skills in using materials and tools: Cesar shows us the right ways to go about restoring the arches and windows.
Friday we went to Akron to help the super-thesis with the Boys and Girls Club. With 10 additional people, significant progress was made on the building. In 9 hours, we were all able to complete roof framing, lay over half the sheathing on the roof, and place majority of the sheathing on the exterior walls. The placing of tar paper and various other duties were also completed. At the end of the day, we were able to accomplish the amount of work that could have normally been done in several days.
Next week, we plan to repair more damaged wood and continue construction on the East/entry wall. We will finish setting the remaining columns and will place the top sill. The weather calls for rain, therefore if we have any rainy days, we plan to start restoration of the church windows.
